House 181

A Tropical Prototype For Single Family Detached Dwelling

The house was to influence the modern tropical dwelling for the Malaysian context, when, at the time it was finised in 1999, the prevailing architecture in Malaysia was quite different – in mainly vernacular style.

In the estate where it was built, it was to be the cheapest house to be constructed, demonstrating an inexpensive way to build a tropical house without resorting to kitsch or, retrospection.

The house was to be one of five Malaysian buildings to appear in Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture in 2004 along with the usual large iconic buildings. It was also known as Pat’s House.

The house was a lyrical depiction of ‘inflection’, where formal lines are used to create nuances of light and mood.
